Homeless Blues

Trailer

About the Film

On the northeastern edge of Prague, in a landscape of orchards, bridges, and railway lines, a unique social project was founded ten years ago – Homeless Blues. The Prague 9 district decided not to push homeless people away, but to give them a chance: to provide housing containers, offer work, and help restore a sense of dignity.
Over the span of one year, the documentary follows the life stories of several people who joined this experiment – people living on the margins, learning how to stand firmly on the ground again.

The documentary film Homeless Blues was selected for and honored at numerous prestigious festivals worldwide.
The documentary will have its world premiere at the One World International Documentary Film Festival on March 14, 2026, at 5:30 PM in the Grand Hall of Lucerna Cinema in Prague, where it will compete in the Czech Joy section.

Film Protagonists

Karel

Karel

Karel “The Carpenter” (61) – a craftsman who has turned his container into a home, complete with a pergola and a fence. Despite his talent and intelligence, he is unable to escape the settlement. His commentary reveals deeper layers of the community’s life – its philosophy, humor, and acceptance. The leitmotif of his story is a girlfriend who repeatedly disappears and returns.

Karla

Karla a Martin

Karla (56) and Martin (49) – a long-term couple living in a “shepherd’s hut” beneath the railway tracks, who after years of surviving together decide to get married. Their wedding day at the Máchalka vineyard, attended by Mayor Tomáš Portlík, becomes a symbol of human hope and quiet normality for those living outside the system. The banality of their everyday life turns into a metaphor for uprootedness.

Margita

Margita

Margita (49) – a woman who, after the death of her partner, remains alone on a small farm in the Klíčov orchards, surrounded by goats, sheep, and cats. Grief, loneliness, and inner strength form the film’s quiet backbone. We witness her struggle with despair as well as the comfort she finds in animals.

Hanka

Hanka a Naďa

Hanka (50) and Naďa (40) – living under the Prosek overpass. They keep order, sort waste, and at the same time look for jobs while collecting recyclables. Both are newcomers who are only just settling into their assigned container beneath the overpass. They are outgoing, restless, sociable women with a talent for small-scale trading and improvisation. From time to time they roam the surrounding area, collecting usable items from garbabe bins and selling them on weekends at the flea market at Elektra. They go to Charity services to do laundry and shower, and from donated items they create a small but cozy home. In front of their container they build a small garden with herbs, tomatoes, and ornamental flowers — a tiny island of order amid chaos, a source of pride and a symbol of a new beginning.

Karel Valenta

Karel Valenta

Karel Valenta – a field worker from the Environmental Department of Prague 9, is far more than an official to the local homeless community. He is their support, confidant, and quiet leader. People in the settlement call him “dad” because he treats them with respect, but also with firmness that gives them a sense of safety and boundaries.
